Ruben Rodriguez departed from this earthly world and went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at the age of 56. After a year-long struggle with cancer, Ruben was where he wanted to be: in his home with his girls.
Sacarias and Maria Paula (Sanchez) Rodriguez of Lubbock, Texas were blessed with Ruben Rodriguez’s birth on January 12, 1963.
He married Vicki Lyn Petty on August 22, 1987 in Lubbock where they lived until 1992. Then, they moved to the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, first to Irving and then to Arlington, Texas in 2000.
The next-to-youngest of 8 siblings, he had many teachers and mentors. As one of five boys whose father owned a concrete business, Ruben learned the value of hard work as he worked with his father and brothers pouring concrete.
As a youth, Ruben was an athlete who excelled in all sports including track, football, and basketball; his favorite was cross country. He participated on the men’s gymnastics team at Texas Tech and learned to balance life in more than one way as he completed his Bachelors of Architecture degree at Texas Tech University. After he was no longer competing, he also worked as a gymnastics judge for Texas Tech.
Ruben moved his young family from Lubbock to Irving in 1992 where he worked for Rees Associates before becoming a 24-year employee and Associate of SBL Architecture, Inc.. Throughout his last year battling cancer, Ruben’s love and passion for architecture was still very clear and present in his mind every day. He leaves behind a beautiful architectural legacy of mentorship that is only eclipsed by his love and devotion to his family.
Ruben’s family was his priority – his personal family and his work family. Ruben had a passion for grilling food outdoors. He also enjoyed fishing even though he ended up feeding more fish than catching them. Ruben shared his humor, kindness, compassion, hard work and “can’t say no” attitude with many.
