Johnny Lorn Horton
1942 ~ 2017
Johnny was born to Ernest and Mildred Horton on September 17, 1942 in Shamrock, Texas. He attended Worth Heights Elementary, Rosemont Middle and High School. He later acquired his GED and certifications for various specialty trades and professions. He wore many hats in his lifetime; not literally of course, because he did not like his hair messed up or out of place. His field of trade began as a teenager when he started working as a plumber's helper with his father, E.L. He joined the military in 1961, he served in the Marines for four years and nine months, being honorably discharged. He was so proud to be called a veteran for our country. After leaving the military, he returned to work as a plumber, working for his father and numerous companies. His relationships went far beyond just working for the companies, because there was a bond of friendship that developed with his coworkers and employers that carried on through many years. Still young, he took a step of faith and answered the call to be an evangelist traveling abroad for a while. A "tent preacher" as they called him. He was one of the best dressed of his time! But not too fancy; he was willing to still swing a sledge hammer to drive in those stake to secure the tent poles. He later began his own plumbing company with his sons as his helpers. Often making a run for parts to the supply house, he would leave the boys behind to work and showing up just in time to see they had completed digging the ditch or any other tasks he instructed them to do. He then accepted the responsibility to pastor his family's church: South Side Full Gospel that his father founded. Retiring from his business, he then began a new career he loved: he became an osha, medical gas professional where he
continued as an education instructor. He taught new plumbers and prepared them to obtain their license in the field he was highly qualified in. All the while faithfully serving as pastor of South Side Full Gospel. He is the coordinator and president of Bride of Christ ministries. A discipline he was very passionate about. He was a key component in training new ministries and he was very helpful in giving them the opportunity to develop and helping them grow into the maturity of their calling. He also began the Monday night fellowship meetings associating with our neighboring churches. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, no matter what the need or sacrifice required of him. Most often behind the scenes helping and giving without hesitation, never desiring public recognition. He always managed to do everything to perfection. Even a simple task of hanging a picture frame required a tape measure and a level. He would always say, "if you don't do it right, just don't do it". He delighted much in giving you a "hard time" to those he cared about. He had a smile like no other and a laugh that was unmistakable. A drill sergeant voice you mostly definitely heard when he spoke. You knew when he entered the room. He was a wonderful husband to his wife Maggie that made her dreams come true. The sky's the limit! Her best friend and love of her life. He instilled the importance of continually being faithful in their attendance for church. He is the father to five children that he loved. He always tried to make sure they had all they needed; He didn't let them know where the answer came from a lot of the time. It hurt his heart to know if they had to do without. He would tell them to pray and trust in God and God will meet your need. His heart's desire was to see all of his children, and their families, in church serving God. On March 3, 2017 He finally made his entrance to the promise land, to meet God his maker, Jesus his Savior, the Apostle Paul he spoke about quite often and be reunited with his family that went before him. He is ready to sit down at the banquet table and walk those streets of gold in his new body.
He leaves behind his wife, Maggie Horton and children; daughter, Cindy and her husband, John Shipman, son, David and his wife Kelly Horton, daughter, Kathy Locke, son Sean and his wife, Shelia Horton, daughter, Christine and her husband, Bobby Samaniego. Johnny also leaves behind his grandchildren, Mandy and her husband, Brian Cockroft, Michelle and her husband, Ron E. BeJessie, Kody McDonald, Shae Horton, Josh Horton, Zeke Horton, Stephanie and her husband, Wesley Skinner, Mark and his wife, Aimee Smith, Nick Smith, Chris Smith, Jordan Weathers, Casey Horton, Jaime and her husband, Will Brigham. Johnny also leaves behind three great grandchildren, Kayden BeJessie, Tatum Cockroft, Trinley Cockroft and numerous friends and loved ones.
