In Loving Memory of Mary Magdalene Smith

1956 - 2026

Mary Magdalene Smith was born on April 16, 1956, in Gary, Indiana to Willie Smith and Katie Louise Smith.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend whose life was centered around the people she loved the most. Family meant everything to Mary, and she poured herself into those she cared for.

Mary was the devoted mother to daughters Isheka V. Gill-Bostick (Devontae), Nyesha L. Smith, Jalisa T. Smith and sons Tony L. Smith (Shanda) and Jamaal D. Gill. As much as she loved being a mother, becoming a grandmother brought an entirely new kind of joy.

Mary also devoted her life to caring for others through her profession. She was a Patient Care Technician at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, TX. She worked this profession for over 30 years, but retired from Methodist after 10 years of service. Caring for the sick, elderly, and vulnerable reflected the same compassion she showed throughout her personal life. Along with Mary's compassion, she was also known for making jokes. She always had a joke up her sleeve or "Throwing Slug's" as she called it. Her laugh was contagious and will be missed deeply.

On September 10, 2026, Mary departed this life, leaving behind a family whose lives were forever shaped by her love, strength, humor, and generosity.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Katie Smith, Her brothers Leon Dread, Arthur Dread and Henry Smith; her sisters Margaret Smith, Stella Smith-Gonzales and her identical twin sister Martha M. Smith
