Obituary

The world lost a Renaissance man when Paul Meyers passed away on August 20, 2017. Paul was born in New Jersey on October 7, 1938 and upon learning to construct mathematical proofs as a boy, he began to pursue an interest in mathematics and logic that continued throughout his life. Paul served in the Air Force from 1957 through 1961, and was stationed abroad in Morocco. Paul married and had a son, Joseph Michael, and two daughters, Anne and Kristy; later he divorced and remarried Barbara Leiman and became a stepfather to her children. After their divorce, Paul moved from New Jersey to Texas in 1994. Paul was well-read and an avid student of math, physics, computer science, and philosophy. He enjoyed reading books about mathematical illusions by Martin Gardner and natural philosophy by Carl Sagan. Paul's interest in the mathematical theories behind computation led him to become a self-taught computer programmer in the 1970's and throughout his life he was avidly interested in the topics of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Paul also enjoyed playing the piano and practicing martial arts. Paul found a community of like-minded skeptics and freethinkers when he joined the North Texas Church of Freethought, a church for nonbelievers who value a naturalistic world view free from supernatural deities. The church became Paul's family after he lost touch with his children. Paul was a gentle spirit with an inquisitive mind who could always be counted on to arrive with a book on advanced math or science to every gathering. Though he rarely steered the direction of conversation, he enthusiastically offered his unique insight on any subject that intrigued him. He frequently and mischievously teased his friends with emphatic circular arguments. His friends at NTCOF will miss his thoughtful and erudite contributions to our community. Although we are sad that we'll never see him again, we can remember Paul's interest in Conway's "Game of Life" and know that his presence has forever altered and beautified the subsequent patterns of our lives. Services will be held on Monday August 28, 2017 at 9:00a.m at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery located at 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy Dallas, Texas 75211 Lane 3.
