Obituary

Murray, Robert Lynn Robert L. Murray, age 71, ended his struggle with multiple myeloma cancer on January 27, 2017 in the Baylor All Saints hospital in Ft Worth, Texas. Robert was born April 3, 1945 to Leonard and Clara Murray of North Ft Worth. From a young age, Robert worked diligently with his father in the Star Telegram's circulation department. He won a Star Telegram prize trip to Europe along with other carriers when he was 17. He attended Hardin-Simmons University in 1964 after graduating from Northside High School. While a student at HSU, Robert helped to expand its student publications with his skills as Business Manager. After leaving HSU, he taught school in the Edgewood District of San Antonio in the late 60s. In the 1970s, Robert returned to Ft Worth, the city he loved and supported with his talents and hard work. Ft Worth had few boosters like Robert. His heroes were Amon G. Carter, the Bass developers, and Jenkins Garrett. Among his achievements in the civic affairs of his hometown was his chairmanship of a Neighborhood Task Force that distributed Federal money for infrastructure projects. He also joined a group of young conservation activists who eventually saved the cattle baron's Thistle Hill mansion from the wrecking ball. At Christmas time, Robert could be found with his Jaycees brotherhood lugging the New Mexico Christmas tree to Ft. Worth's Sundance Square. Robert returned to work with the Star Telegram in the 80s as a District Manager. He received an MA degree from TCU and continued to be active in public affairs throughout the decade. In the 90s, Robert returned to education. He helped to author Ft Worth ISD's handbook for substitutes. He took a position teaching business and computer literacy with the District's New Lives School for pregnant girls, and he was an adjunct faculty in Economics and Marketing for Tarrant County Junior College. With his exceptional skills in classroom management, Robert guided and inspired many of his students to prepare for work and responsibility after graduation. He continued in his position at New Lives until the first decade of the current century. When the school was threatened with closure, Robert worked with the ISD school board to extend its life for a few more years. He was well respected by his colleagues and school administrators. For the last nine and half years of his life, Robert demonstrated powerful courage in his struggle with the blood cancer that eventually took his life. He attended the myeloma support group and cooperated with efforts to educate the public about multiple myeloma. He is survived by his brother, Gary Murray and nephew John Murray. He will be missed by friends and associates who knew of his character and leadership.
