In Loving Memory of Verl Ray Mitchell

1930 - 2025

Verl Ray Mitchell, age 95, passed away peacefully on September 17th in Weatherford Tx, . He was born on May 28, 1930, in Flats, Texas, to Minnie Mae and W.E. Mitchell. Verl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Effie Elizabeth Mitchell; his oldest son, Rev. Eddie Ray Mitchell; his only daughter, Stacy Michele Binion; as well as numerous siblings, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his younger brother, Billy Joe Mitchell; his two sons, Kip Harlan Mitchell and wife Cheryl, and Terry Dean Mitchell and wife Harriet; his daughter-in-law, Joyce Mitchell, wife of Eddie Mitchell; and his son-in-law, Bobby Binion, husband of Stacy Michele Binion. Verl also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. Verl's story is one of redemption, faith, and perseverance. He was married young to his beloved wife, Beth, and together they worked hard to build a life. But it was during a dark moment in his life that Verl experienced a profound spiritual awakening. While sitting in his 1949 Ford pickup truck, drunk and at the end of his rope, he heard the song "When He Reached Down His Hand For Me" on the radio. As the words echoed, "He reached way down for me," Verl felt the presence of God settle beside him, and in that moment, he gave his heart to Jesus. This life- changing encounter freed him from the grip of alcoholism, and he never looked back.

Verl went on to become a devoted minister in the Church of God, serving in various capacities, including Evangelism and Home Missions Director in Texas and Virginia, State Overseer for Idaho, Utah, and Oklahoma, and pastoring in Virginia, Georgia, and ultimately back in Texas. His ministry was defined by his deep commitment to sharing his testimony and the message of the gospel with anyone and everyone he met. Only heaven knows how many lives he touched and changed through his faithful service to God. Verl was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt, and golf. Much like his passion for bringing people into the kingdom of God, he was a master fisherman, often out-fishing anyone in a boat or from the shore. His love for fishing was a reflection of his love for souls—he was a magnet for both fish and lost souls alike. He and his wife Beth could often be found in the evenings, reading God's Word together and praying over each of their family members by name. This nightly tradition was one he kept to the very end. Though Verl was not a perfect man, he lived a life surrendered to God, always striving to serve the Lord and his family with unwavering dedication. He was a man who gave his all to the Kingdom of God and to his loved ones, and his legacy of faithfulness, love, and devotion will forever be cherished. Verl's life was a testament to the transformative power of God's grace, and his impact on the lives of those who knew him will never be forgotten.
